Hi, I'm Jermaine Griggs, founder of this site. We teach people how to express themselves through the language of music. Just as you talk and listen freely, music can be enjoyed and played in the same way... if you know the rules of the "language!" I started this site at 17 years old in August 2000 and more than a decade later, we've helped literally millions of musicians along the way. Enjoy!

Just another gospel player who barely knows what he’s talking about. sounds good and for people who want to sound like him, go for it. I like Jazz 101 and 201 better than what I’ve seen from Michael Berel and now this Jason white.

Mike, i have you to know that these are the hottest musicians in the industry. you don’t know what you’re talking about. If you don’t know them or follow gospel music, then you won’t have appreciation for what they’ve done and continue to do. I respect jazz just as much as I respect any other genre. I expect you to respect the genre and players I love and look up to as well.

I’m definitely getting this one as soon as it drops. Jason and Mike have been two of my favorite players for a minute now. It’s 12:45 AM here in Chicago and I’m trying to practice just what he showed on the clip above. If it’s gonna be a four hour dvd, that’s an awful lot to learn. I finally picked up some of the theory he’s been using.

I hate it when they just show you a bunch of chords. I already know the chords on my own or can easily find out how to construct a chord. I would rather see them applied in a song.

    Reply

    28 Jermaine

Hi everyone! Thanks for your comments!

@anonymous: Sign up on the interest list with your e-mail and you will see a clip with him applying chords to real songs. In fact, in the course, he takes a couple of hymns and breaks them down, step by step, with “his” chords. “To God Be The Glory” and “Oh how I love Jesus”… but this clip was all about shouting music, which doesn’t connect to a particular song… it’s a song and portion of a service in and of itself.

Please keep posting comments! Good, bad, and ugly! Loving the feedback! :)

It looks and feels like a blessing but so did the clips advertised for the “Mike Bereal Master Class Vol 1” and when we didn’t see them on the DVD after buying it we were disappointed.
So not sure we’ll buy… Like too but dunno…and you go Mr. Jason White! This clip is inspirational and anointed like Jonathan Powell’s GospelKeys Pro600!

@ppl: I totally understand where you’re coming from. And thanks for leaving your feedback! :) Those clips that our team put up of Mike were just him messing around. Mike is an incredible talent as you all know. One of the best. I just wish it was more clear on the clips that he was just playing stuff in between breaks but it wasn’t. The 5th clip we ended up releasing of Mike was from the actual course and it was positioned as a tutorial. I even did a full newsletter on it. As you know, that was fully in the course.

Having learned from that experience, I told the team to NEVER put any clips out there that aren’t in the course… whether it’s just them playing around in our studio or behind the scenes (which I think people would enjoy but I don’t want to risk the miscommunication). So what you have HERE is 100% in the course. The 4 clips we’ve shared are not only in the course but there’s tons more where that came from. I was personally there EVERYDAY during the video shoots and I personally made sure to get as much out of Jason as possible in these 4 hours. Notice how much he got through in the 12 minutes above? Was it not an efficient 12 minutes? :).

So rest assured, if you see it here, it’s there. No outtakes or “messing around” clips will be shared… even though there’s some good blessings in the messing around clips for those who can pick them out. Well, I take that back… if they ever are shared, I’ll make sure that it’s clear that they are outtakes or just him messing around.

Please keep the comments coming! I love the feedback! Thanks again!

I think Jason White and Michael Bereal both are great players! I stop saying one player was better than the other because I always would hear another player better than the previous player I thought was the best player! Obviously we all have ears and we know an average player from a good player and a good player from a great player but when your on the same level whether your an average, good or great player it comes down to which STYLE you like the best!

I think that Jason was very professional in his video depiction of how to play the various chords in gospel music. I also see a very useful benefit to those of us whom are intermediate players and our expectations may be much different from those whom are advanced players. We want everything we can get, and if you love music, the detailed information provided by musicians such as Jason is just what we need. It is simple to follow and can be applied to numerous songs. I have read a lot of the comments posted herein (both negative and positive), and I can tell you that his (and the other musicians on your site) instructional videos are very much needed and appreciated.

    Thank you for understanding JG.

We’ve been with you for a few years now and have always appreciated the blessings God has delivered via your ministry. This ministry has introduced a wealth of important fundamentals, extended knowledge, anointed musicians and we feel blessed to have come upon you.

Please know that we have been enjoying the Mike Bereal DVD very much.

It’s just that those “outtakes” clips you mentioned help to inspire us to buy the DVD, and so moved by the clips were we, that we bought a West Angeles COGIC CD while waiting for the Master Vol DVD to arrive. So we are fans as well as siblings in Christ no doubt! Didn’t know the clips were of MB just “messing around” so thanks for clearing up this miscommunication JG.

All the tutorials that have either come from you (HearandPlay.com) or via you (for example Jamal Hartwell’s) have been most helpful with positive results!

Because all of you share the knowledge and information so uninhibitedly, we feel inclined to support your mosaic of artistic works without hesitation. This journey has been a complete breath of fresh air to others whom withhold and portion out segments for whatever reason.

Remarkably, it has cut down the learning curve of painstakingly picking notes out off of a song by many arduous and tedious hours. One can appreciate and be grateful for your unselfish method of teaching that you all do in these tutorials! Just an excellent approach IMHO. It also gives me more time to devote elsewhere. Prayer’s important too. :-)

Agreed regarding the efficiency of the 12-minute clip. Simply anointing and just outstanding! Well, if they’re ever available or you ever decide to do a release on those “outtakes, messing around” on Mike Bereal, we’re here!

Looking forward to Jason White’s new DVD. We’re inspired.

May God continue to bless all of you (ministers of music and inspiration through the spirit of Jesus Christ) Mr. Jermaine.
    God Bless

My oldest son is the Minister of Music at his church and he has already improved his playing with Mike’s course. I know Jason from a few years back and I will DEFINITELY be purchasing the course for my son. There is NO WAY that neither Jason nor Mike could give you all of their respective giftings, but what they’ve managed to put on DVD thus far is PRICELESS. As a professional singer/songwriter and the mother of professional producers, singers and musicians, I STRONGLY recommend these courses. Hats off to you, Jermaine. I have learned so much from both the Hear and Play piano course, just received my Vocal Course with Nena. As a pastor’s wife and worship leader, I am so grateful for all this information. I am a self taught musician and you are one of my secret weapons! PTL. Susan Wilder, susandee77@aol.com

My desire was to play in church and for childrens church. I am a beginner that can hear the music but dont know what to do with the left hand. I prayed for God to open the doors for me to learn to get more involved in childrens church. till I started getting involved with the music to play by ear. It has been a blessing and still learning to play beautiful music for God. Thank you for the clips ect. I am so blessed and thankful for the blessing you both have been to me. God is good. I still have a ways to go but I am getting there with your help and most of all the blessing of playing for the Lord. Thank you for making my dreams come true. Keep me in your prayers.

Praise God! I think the displayed clips and this course it truly going to be a blessing to the body of Christ. Jermaine, thank you for having such an open heart to share, and not afraid to introduce and encourage other musicians to share what they know. You truly are someone who reaches out to others, and for that reason God continues to bless you. Great big thanks to the Hear and Play family, we love you!!!!

Jason White, I listened to you on the radio interview the other night and not only are you talented, but you are an anointed vessel and a precious gift from God. Thanks for being a role model for our young men!

One word to describe the love, dedication and hard work Hear and Play puts out: “AWESOME”!!!!!

What intrique me more than the fact that you are providing a different perspective with playing, but you appear to be enjoying every minute of showing what you are conveying. I really enjoyed your chords, your approach, and the various techniques employed. I am actually doing my best to learn how to play the keyboard, at times it is hard, but I am determined to do so.
I am praying that God will bless me well enough to be able to play for the praise and worship service, soloist, and be able to play as well as or better than someone I have idolized most of my life, that is Billy Preston.
So, as the song goes, “Every round goes higher and higher” and that is what I am definitely looking forward to be able to go higher and higher, further and further, deeper and deeper.
    God Bless You

Just wondering why you are not incorporating and including Midi files
    With your DVD’s?

With Midi the tempo and key can be controlled and changed.
Simply by pushing the “Record” button while their playing and you’ll
Have a Midi file. Lead sheets can even be created from a Midi file.

The implications and versatility are endless…

VanBasco’s free Karaoke Player 2.53 allows you to see the fingering of any Midi
    file. http://www.vanbasco.com/download.html

    **********************************
    ANNOUNCEMENT TO EVERYONE
    **********************************

I have sat back and watched some of the comments here on the blog, youtube, and other message boards and while I certainly appreciate the feedback, I’m concerned about the competition that has been created and perpetuated between Mike Bereal and Jason White.

In no way have we (Hearandplay) attempted to pit one against the other. It is certainly not in our best interest for one course to cannibalize the other… and it certainly isn’t in Jason and Mike’s best interest as they work together daily in ministry. It’s not in our students’ best interest either as this could prohibit them and other major players from doing future videos for fear of harsh critique from the online world.

It was not our intention to create this type of environment. It wasn’t even planned to release them this close together but after completing Mike’s course, the opportunity to shoot Jason came unplanned, and we were, of course, honored to do it.

Sure, there were awesome clips of Mike that were published and mistaken as actual content of the dvd. I’ve addressed that above. And because we learn from mistakes, we didn’t want to publish any clips like that of Jason… not because we wanted to portray him as a teacher and Mike as an awesome musician only, not at all. We learned and therefore made the strategic decision to only include content and less “beastly” playing, if you will.

Both courses are awesome! Mike’s course has received rave reviews from up and coming musicians. Perhaps the uber-advanced thought it moved too slow but the majority of students loved what they learned in it. Mike is super-anointed and obviously doesn’t need to prove anything. Just getting him to sit down and show his feel and style was a blessing in and of itself.

So let’s be respectful gospel musicians. Let’s not start anything. Even if Mike and Jason did not worship and play at the same church, we still shouldn’t compare them in this fashion (…not the respectful comments, I’m talking about comments I’ve seen making degrading comments about one or the other).

Remember, we all reap what we sow. God bless everyone and remember and keep the great feedback coming!

Jermaine, May God continue to richly bless you and all of the readers. Jermaine, your ability to attract two of Gospel Music’s Heavy Weights is to be commended. Thank you for realizing that great musicians want to be better and we want to continue improving. I have truly been blessed by both Jason and Mike’s videos and I look forward to more great music from those guys. In addition, I would like for you to perform a tutorial with the keyboardist from Kurt Karr’s last project. I believe that our music family will be blessed by this levite. I really enjoy his anointed talk music before the track “It’s Just The Beginning” . Jermaine, Please secure this gentleman. Jermaine you’re our serrogate voice. I believe that he has a lot of good information to share. One last thing, I agree with the person that stated that Jamaal Hartwell should not be placed in the category of Jason and Mike. Thanks
