The "Secrets to Playing Piano By Ear"

(b9b5) chords. The following lesson focuses on chapter eleven
from the course. If you are already familiar with the "blues
scale", then you might want to skip this lesson.
The "Blues" Scale
The special sound of the blues style is not
only derived from the chord progression, but also from its unique scale. As
compared to the major scale, the BLUES SCALE has only 7 notes and
includes a flatted 3rd, 5th, and 7th tone. The flatted notes are often called
BLUE NOTES.
For example, here is a C major chord:

To change a major scale into a blues scale, the
first rule is to remove the 2nd and 6th tones from the major scale (remember, a
blues scale

Now, flat the 3rd and 7th tones (1/2
step). In C major, the 3rd & 7th tones are E and B. After lowering
them one-half step, they become Eb and Bb:

Lastly, add a flatted 5th tone
(remember, we're still using the natural fifth; however, we are simply adding
the tone right in back of it!). In C major, adding the 5th means adding a
Gb:
Your C Blues Scale should look like this:
