Re: New Ear-Training Software Drastically Improves Playing by Ear

Dear Musician,

What if you could train your ear right on the computer?

I'm not just talking about the computer playing notes while you type correct answers ( ...nor am I talking about clicking notes on a screen for hours).

I'm talking about a revolutionary system that has been carefully designed with advanced intelligence that knows exactly what questions to ask you based on which exercises you get right and wrong.

A learning tool that drills you on notes, scales, chords, intervals, and even allows you to sing and mimic what you hear (using the microphone on your computer or a usb headset mic). In fact, you'll be able to connect a small midi keyboard and answer the questions interactively.

A system strategically broken into six steps (from singing what you hear to determining what notes and chords are being sounded by either typing, clicking, or using your midi keyboard).

... A private tutor that will never get tired of you. It doesn't matter how much you fail or have to repeat a level. It will keep dishing out as many random questions as you can handle. P.I.T.C.H. is patient by nature (obviously) so you never have to worry about being embarrassed, laughed at, or charged more for additional time. Meet your first electronic ear-training tutor!

Okay...

At this point, you may be wondering, "How does a system like this help me in the real-world away from my computer?"

That's a great question.

You see... real songs follow patterns. From the very melody that a song is built around to the chords and progressions that bring it to life, everything boils down to intervals and distances (basically how far the notes, melodies, and chords are apart from each other).

Between the first chord of a song and the second chord rests an interval (perhaps a "fifth" or a "fourth" or some other type of common interval). It is the ear's job to immediately recognize what's going on.

Even better, since songs follow common patterns, the ear begins to recognize these *same* patterns in other songs --- which means that as you learn more intervals and patterns, the time it takes to pick up new songs decreases dramatically.

...So if you've managed to master what the "perfect fifth," "major third," or "minor sixth" sounds like, just to name a few, your chances of hearing them in real songs will increase immensely.

In fact, if you take away intervals and distances, you take away music. Songs are created based on chords and melodies moving up and down various distances and the more you focus on mastering these movements, the better off you'll be.

This process is exactly what playing by ear involves and is formally known as "relative pitch." With the HearandPlayTM P.I.T.C.H. Software, you literally unlock your ear, through effective repetition, to hear the melodies, chords, and chord progressions that occur in thousands of songs.

I'll tell you right now --- the keys to effective training are repetition, interaction, and feedback!

Some programs allow you to listen to tapes in the car. Sure enough, there may be repetition. The tape may also pause for you to interact --- but there is no direct feedback. Who's there to really tell you if you're singing or choosing the right note?

As far as I'm concerned, if your ear is bad when you first start these programs, why should your ear be relied on to determine whether you sang the right note or not? That poses a problem for some musicians.

Then there's live music teachers. Of course, with a teacher, you'll get interaction and feedback. Will you get repetition, though? Well, perhaps for 15 minutes or so and once a week, unless you have mega bucks to shell out for longer sessions. Also, keep in mind that ear-training might only be a portion of your 30-minute to 1-hour session. So what do you do between your lessons?

Quite frankly, I believe "repetition is the mother of skill." It's just human nature that if you repeat something time and time again (with constructive feedback), you'll get good at it!

That's where software  like HearandPlayTM P.I.T.C.H. comes in --- that will allow you to pick a lesson, use your mic (if a singing level), connect your keyboard (if an interactive level), and get feedback during each session.

If you choose the wrong answer, the system tells you immediately and makes you complete more questions to compensate for your wrong answers. If you keep getting wrong answers, the system works with you until your ear develops.

Because the system is designed with advanced intelligence, you can rely on it to keep giving you questions to strengthen areas you appear to be weak in. That's the beauty of P.I.T.C.H.!

You can't cheat this system (like you can do with tapes and CDs). Yes, you can skip lessons but you won't get the "MASTERED" stamp of approval unless you complete each lesson in order with a certain amount of consistent correct answers. That means, you'll never get "ahead of yourself" and your chances of becoming frustrated because you've skipped to a section you can't handle will be lessened. It also randomizes the questions so you never get the same exercise more than once.

With most audio courses, you may start to memorize the order of the questions, therefore minimizing the effectiveness of the sessions after time (which means repetition isn't really effective "REPETITION"). You can also easily put in another tape or CD and skip concepts without really letting them sink in. With P.I.T.C.H., you get true repetition (and the enjoyable type) as you can return to any past lesson for review and get a set of fresh questions in random order, which means an unlimited amount of training.

...And because P.I.T.C.H. continues to give you fresh questions in random order, every lesson is unique, even if it takes you 20 rounds to complete each of them!

All of this is not to say that any of the alternative methods above are ineffective. I've had the privilege to use all of them, personally.

But we also know that technology tends to change the way we do things. Technology makes processes more efficient and saves us time and money. In this case, it allows you to have your very own ear-training tutor that was strategically built with repetition, interaction, and feedback in mind!

I know you're dying to find out how the program works and we'll get to the functional details in just a moment...

...But first, I want to spend one second sharing with you just how powerful this software is (even for a beginner).

Just recently, I hosted a gathering at my home. My sister and her fiancé, Chris, arrived a little early and being the teacher that I am, I coerced him to try this new ear-training program that was being exclusively built for HearandPlayTM subscribers. Now, keep in mind that Chris has never played a musical instrument in his life. I just wanted to see if I could get him started recognizing different tones as a beginner... from scratch.

So we turned on my laptop, loaded P.I.T.C.H., and gave it a try. In the IDENTIFY DEGREES step, he started at lesson one, which prompted him to determine the difference between two tones on the piano. In this case, the tones were C and D. There was also a button for him to hear middle C as a reference point. Although, not really needed for this lesson (since there were only two choices), I explained to him that it becomes very helpful to hear a reference point when the exercises get more challenging --- there are over 440 total.

So he hears the first note. Of course, he has no idea what it is and quite frankly, I don't expect him to unless he's one of the .01% of people (...that's one out of 10,000) who have perfect pitch. He then presses the "reference note - C" button to hear at least how C is suppose to sound. He then presses the "repeat" button to hear how the question sounds again.

Sadly, he gets the first one wrong. The second question comes. He says out loud, "hmm, that sounds like the last note I heard and since I was wrong when I chose C, it must be D." He was right. I stood back and chuckled because, although he didn't know it, he was actually using relative pitch (...and a little problem solving).

Soon, I could hear the computer spitting out "C" --- he picked "C." Then "D" --- he picked "D." Then "D" again --- he wasn't fooled, he picked "D" again. It wasn't more than 2 minutes that he had completed this particular exercise. The software marked a permanent "MASTERED" next to this lesson.

Being pretty competitive, he asked me to speed up the timing between the questions (from beginner to intermediate). I said "sure." The second lesson was a little harder for him because now the computer mixed in octaves, which means that he'd hear C and D, but at random pitches --- like a high "C," a low "D," a "middle C," and so forth. After a few minutes of wrestling around with that exercise, he had become a pro at recognizing octaves too.

We played with the program going to random exercises and seeing how he did. Of course, at one point, enough was enough (...obviously the program gets harder and harder as you progress, step-by-step). He was so interested in the concept that he asked me if he could have a copy.

He now has the P.I.T.C.H software, bought a $30 midi keyboard off Ebay, and is enjoying interactive ear-training during his free time. Surprisingly, he's progressed pretty far on his own in just 5 weeks, can pick out most major and minor chords, and has gotten as far as chord progressions. This just goes to show you the power of electronic, interactive ear-training --- even for a newbie.

Finally, an interactive system that trains you at your own pace... your own schedule... for as long as you want!

  • Discover the power of repetition and how using P.I.T.C.H. will allow you to master melodies, chords, and progressions in a matter of weeks!

  • What music teachers don't want you to know about ear-training. The keys to self-training at your own pace with no hourly charge.

  • How to distinctively recognize tones from the major and minor scales.

  • How to mimic melodies from different scale tones (with a measuring bar that tells you how close you are to the note you're singing).

  • How to instantly recognize intervals like perfect fourths and fifths. If you know anything about music, you know that an overwhelming majority of songs move in fourths and fifths.

  • The differences between melodic and harmonic intervals and how to hear the individual notes that make up both.

  • How to unlock your ear to hear the individual notes of a chord (even the notes in the middle that aren't easily recognizable).

  • The solfege system: You'll be asked to sing random degrees of a scale (like "DO" or "RE" or "LA"). Learn to effortlessly sing any tone of the scale without a piano.

  • Learn how to recognize the distance between perfect intervals versus major and minor intervals. It takes mastery of both the perfect and major/minor intervals to play your favorite songs!

  • Use your own midi keyboard to pick out the right keynotes of melodies, scales, and chords!

  • Start slow, but end fast by adjusting your speed settings. Master each exercise, then return to past lessons with all-new random questions at a faster speed (intermediate or advanced)!

  • Learn to recognize other instrument sounds (piano, keyboard, horns, strings, woodwinds, guitar, bass, etc). Over 10 different sounds to choose from!

Want to train your ear today? Ok, Simple.
Turn on your computer, click the P.I.T.C.H. software and you're ready to start where you left off!

  • Stay focused and on time with P.I.T.C.H.'s convenient session timer. Choose between 10, 15, and 20-minute sessions! Believe it or not, it doesn't take hours at a time to build your ear. Just small consistent sessions.

  • Failure is not an option. P.I.T.C.H. will ask you as many questions as you need to complete a lesson. When you get a question wrong, you'll have to go back to the beginning and answer more questions until you've officially mastered it! Through painless repetition, you'll be unlocking your ear more and more!

  • Never lose track of your progress. P.I.T.C.H. keeps up with the lessons you've completed by putting a "MASTERED" label next to its title. When you load the program, it automatically starts you from the last lesson you mastered.

  • Shows answers of each question in multiple formats: You'll see answers as regular letters (like "C E G") and on the grand staff (for those that sight read).

  • Allows you to complete future lesson but doesn't allow you to officially master lessons out of order. Optimal results are realized when you take each lesson, step-by-step!

  • Answers can be shown at any time by simply clicking the answers button.

  • Having trouble hearing the interval? You can always refer to a reference note button that'll play middle C. As you build your relative pitch, you'll be able to relate what you're hearing to the reference note, "C."

  • Quick tips: Convenient on-screen tips to make sure you're taking full advantage of the software.

  • Three convenient speeds: Beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The program will move only at the speed that you're comfortable with!

  • Connect your microphone and P.I.T.C.H. will tell you exactly what note you're singing and whether you're sharp or flat (with a graphical meter bar that follows your voice).

  • Use a midi keyboard to answer questions. If you don't have a midi keyboard, you can always type your answer in or click the appropriate note with your computer mouse.

  • Compete against other HearandplayTM Zone members (coming soon in the next software update)!

Why I trust you on the "Honor System"

Order Form

Obviously, I'm taking a risk by giving the first 500 students a copy of my newest software, P.I.T.C.H. for just $2.95. Since this is the first time I've offered a direct-download online, I wanted to make the deal irresistible. In other words, I wanted to take on most of the risk, in exchange for wide acceptance of my latest online resource.

But here's why I think I can trust you:

I firmly believe in giving people more than they pay for. And I do my best to demonstrate this every month --- by sharing my most valuable concepts, principles, tips, and tricks in my monthly HearandPlay.com newsletter, even though it's free. Other resources include my free online lessons, my blog, my latest community site, my e-mail follow up lessons, my chord tool, exclusive interviews, and more!

Of course, if you've USED any of my tips and tricks, you've benefited greatly... so you know this for a fact.

Well, in my experience, few people will take advantage of someone who's been generous to them. That's why I believe I can trust you on the "honor system."

And that's why I had wrestled with myself for a long time on whether or not to give the best deal I've ever offered online. In fact, this is the first time I've ever handed you something for a small fee upfront before asking you for any decision.

And if for some reason you're not thrilled with what you see, contact us by e-mail or call us at 1-877-856-4187 within 7 days and pay nothing more.

Our risk-free trial program is pretty simple:

If you agree that this software is what you've been looking for, you won't need to do anything further. Your credit card will automatically be billed $69 — but not before you've had a FULL 7 DAYS to fully use the software inside and out. You'll get an unlock code after you've been billed that you'll use to unlock the unlimited version of P.I.T.C.H. along with lifetime free upgrades.

The risk-free trial is limited to the first 500 students. After that, the price for P.I.T.C.H. will range between $69.00 and  $97.00 with no special trial period if you miss this special offer.

Be one of the first 500 people to claim your $2.95 Trial for 7 days...

...And I'll throw in these 2 Bonus Gifts, valued at $116 --- but yours FREE!

If you are already excited about what you'll be able to accomplish with my P.I.T.C.H. software, then I think you might fall out of your seat when you read what else I'm including.

As you know by now, I can only offer the first 500 students a copy of my P.I.T.C.H. software (...or else too many will reserve it at this ridiculously low price and I won't be nearly as successful selling it at $97 upfront when the time comes).

... But not only am I offering you a risk-free trial of P.I.T.C.H. for just $2.97, but I'm throwing in 2 bonus items:

Bonus #1: Free lifetime upgrades of P.I.T.C.H. ($97 value)
Most software companies make you pay for newer versions. For example, think of your favorite program or video game (if you enjoy a little gaming now and then like me). How often have you bought the newest version over the years?

I can tell you a handful of software programs and games that I buy every year --- just to have the latest version! And just like you, I have to pay full price for each and every one.

The developers and I fought back and forth on whether we should charge monthly for upgrades or sell the future versions for maybe $97 or more. But after much thought, I wanted to do something special for the first 500 only --- and allow them to have lifetime upgrades for free.

  • 440+ levels come installed with the initial version. Regularly, you'll be prompted to download an upgraded version, which may have additional lessons in response to feedback we get from users. This could equal up to 500 or more lessons... total!

  • An update (version 1.1.2.14) that is already scheduled to release soon after the initial launch is integration with HearandPlayZone.com! If you're a free member of the zone, you'll be able to enter your username and password in P.I.T.C.H. and it will post the latest lesson you've completed and your overall time in a directory where you'll be able to compare your progress with other students. You'll also be able to send messages and comments to other users based on what lessons they've completed and how far they've gotten!

* Every time you open P.I.T.C.H., it connects with our site to look for free updates. If there is one available, you'll be prompted to download it. 20 seconds later, you'll have the latest version!

»»» Order your copy today for just $2.95 «««

Bonus #2: Free instructional tutorials from me ($19)
I'll take you by the hand and brief you on various parts of the software. I'll give you background information and theoretical examples of why understanding and properly hearing tones, scale degrees, and intervals are important.

The program is simple enough to understand on its own --- but I take no chances. For that reason, I'll make sure you understand exactly how to use it and how to progress at the speed best for you!

These tutorials will be accessible through the menu interface of P.I.T.C.H.

Let's Wrap this Up

Let me ask you this: What if this software helps you to finally unlock your ear to play all the chords and songs you've been wanting to play for the longest? What would that be worth to you?

What is it worth to you to be able to improvise ... to hear a melody, scale, or chord and be able to play it ... to hear a pattern of chords on the radio and be able to imitate exactly what you hear. What is that worth to you?

I can't answer this question for you but I can say this:

I wish I had this kind of software when I was first learning. I bet I could have easily shaved five or more years off my learning curve. Perhaps, we'll share this belief very soon.

At $2.95, I'm literally opening the door for *anyone* to try this software risk-free. You'll be able to immediately download it and start right away.

  • No shipping costs (especially for our increasing overseas student population)

  • No wait time

  • No hourly charge

  • All interaction and fun!

Question #1: What are the system requirements to run the P.I.T.C.H. Software?

Answer: Hardly any requirements...

System Requirements (File is in EXE format):

PC Requirements:

  • Windows 95 / 98 / ME / XP, NT

  • 64MB (32MB Recommended) of ram

  • 28.8k (or faster) Internet Connection (for online help and updates)

  • 2 megs free HD space

Macintosh Requirements (not compatible unless you're running a pc emulator program like the one listed below):

  • Compatible PC Emulator (Virtual PC by Connectix
is one we recommend, you can get more information
    at http://www.connectix.com/)

  • Mac OS 7.5.5 or later

  • 3MB free Hard Drive space

  • 28.8k (or faster) Internet Connection   (for online help)

Software Requirements: A midi usb keyboard is optional. Personally, I use an M-Audio 49 key usb keyboard. It doesn't require any software and is ready to go as soon as you plug it in your computer. Remember that you can always answer questions by simply clicking or typing in the correct answers.

A regular $10 headset microphone is needed for various lessons.

Summary: This program is very very small. Even if you bought your computer back in 1998, the program should work just fine (on any pc). For Macintosh users, you will need some type of PC emulator. We are working on future updates for mac-compatibility.

Question #2: Do I need a microphone and midi keyboard to use this software?

Answer: A midi keyboard makes the experience a lot more enjoyable but you can benefit just the same by using your computer keyboard to type the answers in (or your mouse to click the answers on the screen).

As for the microphone, steps 3, 4, and 6 rely on you being able to sing into your computer so some type of input device is needed. Some computers have built-in microphones so if this is the case, it can work. A headset microphone is recommended because it blocks background noise. You can find one for very cheap at your local computer or office store. These days, there are a host of things you can do with a microphone, both online and offline (outside of the P.I.T.C.H. software) so having a microphone is very advantageous.

Question #3: After my free trial, will my program expire?

Answer: No, it will only expire if you've cancelled it (by e-mailing or calling us). If you choose to keep the program after your $2.95 7-day trial, no further action is needed. We simply bill you in 7 days for the full version and the program is permanentely registered to you and qualifies for lifetime upgrades.

You'll have unlimited access to all 6 steps, 440+ levels, and more! For $2.95, I want to give my 500 most dedicated students an opportunity to try it with no hassles or major obligations. If you're like me, you'll agree that the program is worth every penny, even after the trial period.

After the trial period, you won't need to do anything further. Your credit card will automatically be billed $69 — but not before you've had a FULL 7 DAYS to fully use the software inside and out. You'll get an unlock code after you've been billed that you'll use to unlock the unlimited version of P.I.T.C.H. along with lifetime free upgrades.

Note: Your trial program is not limited in any way. It is the full version. It simply expires if you don't decide to continue with the program.

Question #4: Can I repeat the software from the beginning if I've mastered all the lessons in a particular area?

Answer: Yes, after the trial period, you have unlimited access to the program forever. You can easily access the program menu up top and reset all mastery levels. This will allow you to re-master all the lessons again from scratch.

With over 440+ lessons, it'll keep you quite busy before you ever think of re-mastering any levels. However, I've found it helpful after completing a round to go back and try to work on my perfect pitch. That is, try determining the notes you hear *without* using any reference notes.

Question #5: Is P.I.T.C.H. only for the piano?

Answer: Absolutely not. While it uses the piano as it's main interface, you can actually change the sounds from the program menu. Some of the sounds you can choose from are: piano, electric piano, xylophone, guitar, bass, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, violin, synth, organ, and flute! If using your physical instrument, you'll be studying in concert mode. It's your choice.
