Chord Series
The "Secrets to Playing Piano By Ear"
course covers everything from the basics and fundamentals to Cmin13
(b9b5) chords. The preceding 6-day course was taken from Jermaine
Griggs's 300-pg piano course. This lesson (Day 6) summarizes all of
the previous lessons.
The Secrets to altering Chords (12)
"Conclusion"
Dear Friend,
Thank you once again for giving me the opportunity to share
my free 6-day "Gospel series" course with you. It has been a pleasure
serving you.
There is just something about gospel music which
makes it very unique from other styles. For one, it requires a great level of
improvisation. That is, one cannot predict most happenings in gospel music. It
is common for a choir director to "break the music", modulate to another key,
speed or slow down a song, etc. That is why one must be skilled at knowing
different chords and can't be "guesstimating" chords when it is
time to improvise!
This is why I have created a
course which will allow musicians the opportunity to
study the theory and principles behind what they are playing. It is nothing like
playing a song and actually knowing what you're playing. I have been across
musicians who will say "just play this chord." I might say, "Well...
what chord is that?" They will respond in a "I don't know but it sounds
good" statement.
Wouldn't you rather be the musician who knows
exactly when they're about to play a
Cmin9 (b5) or a
D Half Diminished chord? Or perhaps the type of
musician who recognizes "2-5-1" progressions even away from the piano? Sure
you do.

this type of musician!
In closing, here are a few reminders when playing
gospel music:
|
1. Most of
the time, a
Thirteenth chord can
replace a
Seventh Chord in
"up-tempo" songs. Try it and hear the difference!
2. Half
Diminished chords always sound good leading to the 1 chord of
any key. For example, D
Half Diminished
----
C major / G (bass)
3. Always
listen when a preacher is modulating (as many do this).
The last thing you want to do is play for someone in the
wrong key. If you have a problem with recognizing
chords and key changes,
