Do you like your fish fully seasoned, fried, and served to you on a silver platter?

fishing-big.jpgHere’s a quote I learned a long time ago and never forgot.

I want to share it with you…

“Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime”

I use this as my philosophy at hearandplay.com. A lot of people want me to just give them the fish. In fact, they want it fully seasoned, fried, and served on a silver platter. They want me to show them chords for this song or that song.

They want to skip the basics and fundamentals. They could care less about learning techniques that will allow them to play hundreds of songs on their own rather than me teaching them one song that will allow them to “eat for a day.”

(I probably will consider a weekly show just teaching songs without much of the theory just to satisfy this want but I will make sure that people know they are getting the fried fish already prepared and that it won’t help them to eat next week).

So I ask you…

Are you the type who just wants the fish and short term gain? Or are you interested in learning how to fish for the long run? (This isn’t just for music. This applies to virtually any skill or goal that is to be attained).

And if you are in a position to help others, do you simply give them the fish or do you offer to teach them how to fish?

Jermaine I actually like the way you’re doing things. It helps you to think. I especially like the posts that you let us interact with you. I really enjoyed the last few posts where we have to give the scales to the notes. Really it’s educational as well as fun. So the answer to your questions is I rather be taught how to fish for my food than to have it given to me. Besides there are other websites that can give you just chords. Keep up the good work! One day the rest of us will come forth and pass what you have giving so freely unto others.

    God bless!
