saying that this article does not intend to discourage you from sight
reading. In fact, we teach the basics of sight reading even
before exploring the techniques of playing by ear. For those of you who
don't know what sight reading is, it is the ability to read songs from
sheet music. Although this is a wonderful skill to have, if one does
not know the theory behind what they are playing, it will
create several disadvantages:
>>> Sight readers will rely
heavily on sheet music. Imagine being at church or at an event
where you are playing and you must keep your eyes glued to a piece of
paper ... how would this feel? I am not speaking from inexperience!
I have been there ... Don't forget ---- I teach sight reading as well!
>>> Sight readers will be
less likely to improvise (add style, chords ... respond to what
they hear) because their goal is to play whatever is written on
the sheet music accurately.

attempt to memorize entire songs instead of simply recognizing
why chords are played at certain points in a song ... this is

songs even without being at a piano.

songs faster and easier because you understand
why chords are played at certain points in songs.

memorize chord progressions (pattern of chords played

I
have discovered several techniques that I know you will benefit
from. These techniques are not super-complicated theories that
take a countless number of hours to learn. They are simple,
easy-to-understand principles that every
musician should know and utilize!
1. Learning how melodies are
constructed
I believe that it is
very important to understand how melodies are created. Why is
this? Because if you understand where melodies come from, you will be
more apt to predict where the notes of the melody are going...
For example,
(a) if I
knew that a melody was being played in the key of C, I would first assess
whether this melody sounds like it is created from a major,
natural minor, melodic minor, harmonic minor, blues, or any other
scale (I can show you how to do this
... don't worry).
(b) By knowing all of
these scales and being able to recognize them with my ear,
I can then eliminate notes that are lesslikely
to be a part of the melody (unless they are used for other purposes
... "accidental notes, leading notes ... etc). I can also show you
how to learn all of your major, minor, blues and other scales. My
secrets cover all of these in depth and will show you how to play
them instantly without even thinking about it.
(c) After using these
techniques to recognize melodies from scales, you will get more
and more experienced and will be able to immediately play melodies
in your head! This is a proven fact! It is common for me to
turn on the radio while driving in my car and hear a melody that I
am easily able to transcribe in my mind. It's exciting AND If you

QUICK
EXAMPLE: If I
recognized that a song was being played in C major, by:
(1) knowing the
notes of the C major scale, (2) knowing what notes are most likely
to be played, and (3)
knowing what notes are not likely to be
played, I should be able to predict what notes will be played
(or for that matter, what notes have already been played ...)
Below, the shaded notes
represent the notes of the C Major Scale (the
easiest scale to memorize because it's all the white notes)
By understanding(1)
what scale they are created from (whether it is Major, Minor,
Pentatonic, Aeolian, Phrygian ... don't worry, I will help you to
understand these names and how their scales are created).
By understanding(2) what notes are immediately eliminated or less likely to occur
throughout the sequence of a melody, and
(3) what notes are most
likely to be repeated (as illustrated above) ... one can learn

Major scales make up melodies &
chords.
With the knowing of scales, one can use a simple technique
to locate
any chord. For example, if
I knew that a C Major Scale consisted of eight notes: C - D
- E - F - G - A - B - C, and that threeof its notes
make up a major chord, all I would have to know is
which three notes out of the scale make up the chord.
By
knowing the formula (or technique of forming a major chord)
but not the scales, the formula is still useless. Thus, we
stress learningall twelvemajor scales. Not only
